Pamela Polland

Latest update of post: December 2019.

Pamela Polland (Photo by Janet Becker)

December 2019: following credits are outdated. For an updated version please go to the new, updated post.

Pamela Polland - Unreleased 2nd Solo Album (aka: The One About The Gas Station Attendant)
Columbia (1973) - US LP

1 - The Refuge*
2 - Willsdon Manor
3 - You Stand By Me
4 - Wild Roses
5 - For Earl
6 - Thank You Operator*
7 - The Ship
8 - Untitled (Dusty Rose)
9 - Interlude
10 - The Clearing

Notes: 1) This entry is about singer-songwriter Pamela Polland’s second solo album, a work that was completed for the Columbia label in 1973 and that remained unreleased. When Columbia Records President Clive Davis got fired from CBS’s music division later that same year, the already completed project got pulled from its scheduled distribution. Davis had personally helped shape this artist’s career and supervised the genesis of that record itself, helmed by Elton John’s producer of that period, Gus Dudgeon, and tentatively titled “The One About The Gas Station Attendant” after the lyrics of one of the numbers in its tracklist (“For Earl”). While the bulk of the sessions had been done in London, three songs were recorded in Los Angeles, two of which with Lee and Russ Kunkel as the rhythm section. After 40 years of shelving, the original and as yet unmastered tapes have now resurfaced from Columbia’s vaults, enabling Ms. Polland to finally make these songs available for listening on her own website. You may enjoy the complete album here: www.pamelapolland.com. Just select “Unreleased 2nd Solo Album” from the navigation bar at the top of page and click on each song title to activate the player. My thanks go to Ms. Polland for graciously allowing me to link back to this content. You may find more detailed info and notes about this story at the above address. 2) Please note that the following personnel list and tech credits are incomplete. Cheers!

Pamela Polland - Vocals, Piano, Background Vocals
Leland Sklar - Bass (1, 6)*
Russ Kunkel - Drums (1, 6)
Davey Johnstone - Guitar (1)
Taj Mahal - National Slide Guitar (6)

Notes: 1) Above picture and following credits were taken from the Canadian vinyl pressing on Arista A2L 8605 (1981) and from the 2007 expanded CD reissue. 2) According to web sources Canadian and US cat #s for the original vinyl release are the same. 3) Expanded CD reissue does not include tracks 9, 12. According to web sources original CD version of album on Arista A2CD 811 was also missing tracks 9, 12. 4) Lee plays bass only on the three Michael Masser-produced tracks (11, 13, 15 / CD10, CD11, CD13). It is necessary to note that track 11 / CD10 (“There’s A Long Road Ahead Of Us”) was at the time released as a single and that its b-side, “This Time Is Ours”, was equally written and produced by Masser and probably had Lee on bass as well. This track was not available on any album until its inclusion in an expanded CD reissue of Ms. Warwick's “No Night So Long” LP. Please check back for the relative entry. 5) For some reason, two songs from the “Hit Records Medley”, that is “There’s Always Something There To Remind Me” (CD5K) and “Promises, Promises” (CD5M) are not included in the expanded CD reissue’s tracklist, both on rear inlay and inner booklet credits. This is a typo as both compositions are present in the medley. 6) According to pictorial web sources a Japan CD issue of this album was released on Arista 32RD-102. Missing tracks on this Japan release would be “Dedicate My Heart” and “Even A Fool Would Let Go”. 7) Original 2-LP release comes with liner notes by Clive Davis. Please see original sleeve for these. 8) Expanded CD reissue comes with liner notes by David Nathan. Please see original booklet for these. 9) Artwork credits are not disclosed in either version.
