Jackson Browne - Running On Empty
Asylum 6E-113 (1977) - US LP
Elektra/Rhino 8122-78283-2 (2005) - Deluxe US CD/DVD-audio reissue with 2 bonus tracks and added content
Side One
1 - Running On Empty*
2 - The Road*
3 - Rosie
4 - You Love The Thunder*
5 - Cocaine
Side Two
6 - Shaky Town*
7 - Love Needs A Heart*
8 - Nothing But Time*
9 - The Load-Out*
10 - Stay*
CD/DVD-Audio reissue bonus tracks (on DVD-Audio disc only)
11 - Cocaine Again
12 - Edwardsville Room 124*
Notes: 1) Above picture and following credits were taken from the 2005 CD/DVD-Audio reissue which consists of a 2-disc package, one an audio CD and one an Advanced Resolution DVD-Audio disc. Both discs present the original 1977 album’s content with different remixes and masterings. 2) Bonus tracks 11 & 12 are included on the DVD-Audio disc only. Track 12 in particular is an instrumental cut by The Section (Lee, Russell Kunkel, Danny Kortchmar and Craig Doerge). Please see the Section entry of this blog’s archive for this group’s discography. 3) Tracks 3 and 8 on the 2005 DVD-Audio disc have different running times/content from their CD-Audio counterparts in the same release: “Rosie” (track 3) has a few seconds of added dialogue on fade out; “Nothing But Time” clocks in at 6’23” as opposed to the original 3’08”, the missing part consisting primarily of a conversation between Jackson Browne and some players in the band over the continuation of the musical track that had been faded-out in the ‘classic’ mix. 4) Both versions of Track 1 (“Running on Empty”) in the 2005 re-issue are different from the ‘classic’ mixes issued so far. The 2005 CD-Audio cut starts dry, without the few seconds of ambient noise that were preceding the performance on the original vinyl album/CD. The 2005 DVD-Audio cut, on the contrary, keeps the ambient noise but adds a Jackson Browne’s voice-over of the first line of the song’s lyrics, right before the song’s intro. 5) DVD-Audio disc includes: a) album in Dolby 5.1 Surround mix; b) album in Dolby Stereo mix; c) album in DTS 5.1 Surround mix; d) photo gallery; e) “Running On Empty” video montage; f) “Tour Photo Album” video montage; g) lyrics; f) weblink. 6) New 2005 packaging includes a small reproduction of the original 8-page photo-booklet that came with the vinyl album plus two essays: “Making the Road His Own: Jackson Browne’s Running On Empty” by Anthony DeCurtis, and “The Photography of Joel Bernstein: The Perfect Accompaniment to a Timeless Album” by Cameron Crowe. 7) New CD booklet keeps all of the pictures from original booklet, with same positioning, scaling and cropping, but for the Rosemary Butler and Doug Haywood picture on bottom right of page 3, which has been slightly widened and re-cropped.
