The song is performed here with just Valenti on voice and guitar and Lee on bass. 3) CD album comes with a 12-page booklet including introduction and liner notes by Jim Dickson, plus further track-by-track notes by hippy icon Wavy Gravy. Please refer to original booklet for these. 4) Booklet also includes a number of black & white and color pictures of some of the artists involved. 5) Credits do not include musicians line-ups for the following groups: Dian & The Greenbriar Boys, The Hillmen (with Chris Hillman, Rex Gosdin and Vern Gosdin), The Byrds, The Dillards and The Gosdin Brothers. 6) Tracks 2, 3, 4, 5, 16, 18 were originally included in the US anthology LP “Early L.A.” released in 1971 on Together Records ST-T-1014. 7) Tracks 12, 13, 14, 15 were originally included in the US Byrds anthology LP “Preflyte” released in 1969 on Together Records ST-T-1001. 8) Tracks 10, 11 were originally included in the US LP “The Hillmen” released in 1970 on Together Records ST-T-1012, reissued in 1981 on the Sugar Hill LP “The Hillmen” SH-3719 and currently available as a special collectors extended edition on Sierra Records M 101. 9) CD album is available from the Sierra Records online shop at sierrarecords.goestores.com . 10) My heartfelt thanks for help to John Delgatto.

11 - Lonesome Blues
12 - Singin’ All Day & Dinner On The Ground

Notes: 1) Album credits attribute track 6 (“My Oklahoma”) to one C. Young while in fact the song appears to have been written by Terrye Newkirk. A previous version of this song was recorded for Warner Bros in 1971 by Ms. Newkirk’s husband, singer-songwriter Steve Young. A remixed version of said version was later included by Young in his semi-anthology “Seven Bridges Road”, released in 1981 on Rounder Records 3058. Songwriting credits on the latter album indicate Ms. Newkirk as the writer of the song (see images at the bottom). Whether this was indicated also in the 1971 Warner Bros. release is unbeknownst to me. 2) According to www.secondhandsongs.com/work/9066, track 3 was not written by D. (Don) Warden but by Autry Inman instead. 3) Album comes with biographical liner notes by Jim Bickhart. Please refer to original artwork for these. 4) In the relative selections, Lee is always credited as playing electric bass alongside acoustic bass-player Roger Bush.

1) “Silver Meteor” is an anthological record album originally released on Sierra Records in 1980, including both previously un-issued and hard-to-find material in the area of early progressive country. Its primary importance lies in the presence of four tracks from guitar virtuoso Clarence White’s first - and never released - solo album. These four tracks were recorded on June 28 and 29, 1973, just two weeks before White got killed by a drunken driver in Palmdale, California, on July 15, 1973. The line-up of Clarence White’s recording group includes members of Country Gazette (minus Kenny Wertz), plus drummer Ed Greene, Ry Cooder on slide guitar (on track 4), Herb Pedersen on guitar and vocals, and Clarence’s brother Roland White on mandolin. Lee plays electric bass on all the four tracks alongside Steve Bush on acoustic bass. 2) “Silver Meteor” got finally reissued on CD in 2010, with 14 added bonus tracks. Two of these are previously unreleased recordings by Country Gazette (22, 23) and one is a cover of the Gram Parsons song “One Hundred Years From Now” performed by an undisclosed group of musicians called The Mystery Band (26). 3) In a list of the 50 greatest ‘lost’ albums compiled in May 2010 by British magazine Uncut, “Silver Meteor” got voted 11th best lost album ever. The poll commentary from Uncut is reproduced on the CD reissue back inlay. 4) Lee is also the bass player on the two Casey Kelly tracks that follow. In the Seventies, Kelly released a couple of albums on Elektra, “Casey Kelly” (Elektra EKS-75040, 1972), produced by Richard Sanford Orshoff, and “For Sale” (Elektra EKS-75072, 1973), produced by Sanford Orshoff and Robert Putnam. Lee is the only bass player on the first album, and plays bass on about half of the songs on the second. 5) CD album reissue comes with a fold-out inlay including original introduction and liner notes by William H. Koon, plus further annotations on the bonus tracks. Please refer to original inlay for these. 6) Above picture and following credits were taken from the CD album reissue. 7) Given the discursive fashion of the liner notes, line-ups and musician/songwriter credits therein presented are sometimes non-exhaustive. Since some of these albums are traceable through the web, it was possible to integrate a few missing catalog numbers and/or songwriters from photographic sources. No other integration has been made in the following write-up. 8) One track from Clarence White’s solo album sessions, “Alabama Jubilee”, got included also in the anthological Clarence White collection “Flatpick” (2006) released on Sierra CD 1024. The anthology got later reissued as an extended 2-CD collector’s edition on Sierra SZCD 6026 (see picture at the bottom). 9) “Silver Meteor” and “Flatpick” are available from the Sierra Records online shop at sierrarecords.goestores.com . 10) Again, my heartfelt thanks for help go to John Delgatto.

2 - Bad Seed* (3:26) - edited version - mono mix

Notes: 1) This is a promo single by Kim Carnes released in 1975. Alternate catalog #s are 12012-S for the stereo mix and 12012 for the mono mix. 2) Song was taken from the album “Kim Carnes” (see entry above). Parts edited out start from the “Oh darlin’, come on and take my love” verse at the end of second chorus, through to the end of the first “Come on and take my love” verse at the closing of third chorus included. In between, the “damn that ol’ dream” bridge has been done away with as well. A further difference between the two versions lies in the “Honey you’re a bad seed” ad-lib of the coda, which is repeated fully six times on the single edit version and eight times on the LP version before total fade-out.

“Like the Panama Limited that for so many years chugged along the rails between Chicago and New Orleans, Johnny Rivers’ “Last Train To Memphis” is a journey across our musical landscape, passing through styles as effortlessly as that mighty engine once charged through the heart of America: Mississippi born Chicago blues, Memphis soul, southern country, and here and there, a touch of Louisiana boogie. Above it all, a driving rock and roll emerges from all of these musical influences. // Johnny Rivers pays homage to the roots of his music with the old Muddy Waters tune “Rolling Stone”, Jimmy Rogers’ “Chicago Bound”, and Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Treat A Dog”. Even his freshly written “Down At The House Of Blues” speaks of heroes B.B. King and John Lee Hooker. At the same time he’s not one to linger in the past. “Gypsy Wind”, “Don’t Let The Rain Come Down”, “Can’t Help Myself”, and “Last Train To Memphis” are all new compositions written with Jack Tempchin. Tempchin, who wrote Rivers’ hit “Slow Dancin’ (Swayin’ To The Music)”, counts the Eagles’ “Peaceful Easy Feeling” and “Already Gone” among his impressive list of songwriting credits. // Best known for his hits “Secret Agent Man”, “Seventh Son”, “Mountain Of Love”, and “Poor Side Of Town”, it was the song “Memphis” that first placed Johnny Rivers on the charts. It was the city’s music that inspired him as a teenager in Baton Rouge, and later his friendship with it’s most famous son, Elvis Presley, that made the writing of “Last Train To Memphis” so natural. In fact, like that locomotive screaming across a delta night, “Last Train To Memphis” brings Johnny Rivers home. // Cindy Hazen, 1998 // Co-Author, “Memphis Elvis-Style””.
