Saturday, January 27, 2018 - The NAMM Show - Jackson Browne and The Section To Be Honored At NAMM TEC Awards

Jackson Browne will be honored by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) at the 33rd Annual NAMM Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards (NAMM TEC Awards), being held Saturday, January 27, 2018 in Anaheim, CA. Browne will receive the prestigious Les Paul Innovation Award given on behalf of the Les Paul Foundation to “honor individuals that have set the highest standards of excellence in the creative application of recording technology in the spirit of the famed audio pioneer, inventor and musician, Les Paul.”

Browne, who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007, released his debut album on David Geffen’s Asylum Records in 1972. Since then, he has released fourteen studio albums and four collections of live performances, and has sold over 18 million albums in the U.S.

In a statement issued on the official NAMM’s website, Les Paul Foundation Executive Director Michael Braunstein said that, “Jackson Browne’s success as a singer, songwriter and guitarist has had a prolific impression on the music industry throughout his successful career. Like Les Paul, Jackson has never shied away from expressing his emotions or thoughts through his music. I have no doubt that Les would have liked to share a few jams with Jackson along the way.”



Also being honored that night will be The Section as the newest inductees to the NAMM TEC Hall of Fame. Dubbed the “Knights of Soft Rock” by Rolling Stone, reaching their peak in the Seventies playing alongside the biggest names in the business, including James Taylor, Carole King, and Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Section released three of their own albums and toured and recorded with Jackson Browne in various occasions. Danny Kortchmar (guitar), Craig Doerge (keyboards), Leland Sklar (bass), and Russ Kunkel (drums) will reunite on stage for a rare performance in support of the evening’s celebration. The Section will also be the panel in a discussion of Jackson Browne’s 1977 album “Running on Empty” moderated by Mr. Bonzai (David Goggin) being held at 4:00 pm.

This year, the awards will be hosted by comedian Demetri Martin and winners will be announced across 23 Technical Achievement and 8 Creative Achievement Categories.

Singles

This and the next two paragraphs are all about unverified data so please take it with the benefit of doubt. According to web sources, the singles released out of Barbara Keith’s second LP were mainly “Free The People” and “All Along The Watchtower”. Following info were sometimes supported by photographic evidence found on online auction sales pages.

“Free The People” was announced as a single release on Billboard magazine on January 13, 1973 (see here). B-side and a ‘valid’ catalog # are undisclosed, but it might be the same release coming with “Rainy Nights Are All The Same” as b-side that surfaced on some online shops and was suddenly no longer available as soon as further inquiries about it were made. I do not know if the latter was for real or just some kind of hoax, nor what type of mixes/edits (if ever) we are talking about.

“All Along The Watchtower” was apparently released for the US market in 1973 on Reprise with “The Bramble And The Rose” as a b-side, and in the same year as a stereo/mono-mixes promo with “Watchtower” on both sides. I found only one catalog # for both releases and no pictorial data, so this also is vaguely suspicious. What seems to be more certain is the existence of a 1973 French release on Reprise with “Watchtower” as a-side and “Free The People” as b-side. There are numerous different pictures of this French release on the web. Still, no indication about whether content might or not be inclusive of edit versions.

Back to ‘things-as-they-are’ now with the following single on A&M. It is the one Barbara Keith single in my possession, and it comes with no credits except for producer and singer-songwriter. Content was not taken from Ms. Keith’s LP on Reprise but it has one composition in common with that release, and the producer is the same (Larry Marks). Please read more about it below.

Notes: 1) This is a promo single by Barbara Keith released in 1970. Alternate catalog #s are 1976 for the a-side and 1977 for the b-side. 2) This version of “Free The People” is not the one included in Ms. Keith’s eponymous Reprise LP (see above). 3) “The Rainmaker” is a composition that was not included in either of Ms. Keith’s two solo albums. 4) Judging from other A&M singles catalog #s, and from the relative ad on Billboard magazine (see point 9), record should be datable to September, 1970. 5) Lacquer #s are 82099 and 82099-X. 6) Single was produced by Larry Marks, apparently (my inference) in between Ms. Keith’s first solo LP on Verve Forecast, produced by Peter Asher in 1969, and her subsequent solo release on Reprise, produced by Mr. Marks himself (see above). While no credits are available for the players on either side, I thought inclusion would be meaningful on account of production continuity with the album Lee plays bass on. 7) Both tracks are mono mixes. 8) No bass player is featured on b-side. 9) The ad repro at the bottom of post was taken from the “Barbara Keith” Reprise album CD reissue on Water Records. From a web research through past issues of Billboard magazine it appears that its caption has been altered so as not to show label and catalog # of release. As you can see from the original ad here, the single it refers to is indeed the one on A&M 1191 (thus, not the album version). The date for this issue of Billboard magazine is 26 September, 1970.

“No Other” - Scrapbook

All of the following pictures were taken during the recording sessions of “No Other” and come from an original contact sheet acquired by Whin Oppice from the John Dietrich estate sale. The following is a note from Mr. Oppice himself explaining more about these images and their origin.

“I can verify that the Scrapbook Lee Sklar “No Other” photos came from the John Dietrich estate. Whether they were taken by John or Linda, I don't know. I acquired original contact sheets and negatives from these No Other Sessions from the John Dietrich estate sale, Lake Havasu City, AZ, July of 2007. In January 2008 I emailed Lee and included scans of the photos from the Dietrich contact sheets. Glad you like the photos. - Whin Oppice”.

Original Bio Insert Transcript

“ “A lot of people think the Section is a studio band - that is, we back people up as the Section. This has never been true. Rarely do the four of us perform together for anyone else.” // In and Out of Lifetimes // Danny Kortchmar, guitarist, is perhaps the most experienced of the four. Paul Rothchild enticed him to LA several years ago to add spark to the fast-fading Clear Light. After that band’s electricity failed, he turned his talents to the studio trade, until Carole King offered him a job touring with her on her first, fateful tour. Afterwards Danny and two of the band members formed Jo Mama and subsequently toured with James Taylor, opening each concert, then backing the famous Taylor during his set. Danny’s appeared on every Warner Bros. James Taylor album, Carole’s “Tapestry” and, of course, many others. Taylor’s last back-up band just happened to be a group of studio musicians who all knew each other and James too, and decided to stay together and become the Section. // Painting in Bass // Lee Sklar had first met James Taylor when James was unknown, hawking his songs where he could. Lee was in a band, one of the members of which knew James previously. Lee is LA all the way - born here, laid back, very hairy, schooled at San Fernando Valley State in art and music. He once brought his band into one of his painting classes, and the rest of the class were to portray them in watercolors. Lee’s bass has a lot of red-brown, oaken flavor, with splashes of blue and green. If you want to be killed colorfully with bass playing, listen to Lee. // Natural Fall // Russ Kunkel is soft spoken. Born in Pennsylvania, moved to LA when he was 10. Played a lot of garage bands and one popular club band that got it together for several years in Hollywood. Started doing demo sessions at $15 a song or $25 a session. “Playing the studios brings you into contact with a lot of people over the years. After a while the Section just naturally fell together.” There are those in the know who are willing to praise Kunkel’s drumming outrageously. And all those out of the know, and just familiar with the Section’s music, would be willing to comply. // Cartoon Keyboards // Craig Doerge was born in Cleveland. Schooled at Trinity College in Hartford, Ct. Played in a college band. Moved to LA and just hung out - driving trucks, selling pianos. Got his first break at Quantum Recorders in Torrance playing keyboards on cartoon sessions. “Jim Keltner and some others were in that band. It was a hell of a cartoon band. I did some cartoon work not more than a year ago, as a matter of fact. I just heard us the other day on the Fat Albert cartoon show.” Craig is pursuing a solo career parallel to the Section (as is Danny - one album, “Kootch”, just released on WB) and is currently working on his own album. On this album Craig plays some synthesizer and Mellotron. Anything with keys he’ll play, and quite well. Craig is the fourth consummate musician in the Section.” ”.

DVDs

So far, the only available JT content with Lee released on DVD is: 1) Various appeareances on SNL (multiple seasons). 2) The Carole King/James Taylor “Live At The Troubadour” CD/DVD 2-disc set (see link at the top). 3) The Morgan Neville documentary “Troubadours” CD/DVD 2-disc set. (see link at the top). 4) The DVD release of the “Purely Music” series laserdisc which has been reissued as “James Taylor Live In Germany 1986” (available also as audio CD). As of today (May 2011) the “James Taylor In Concert” show recorded at the Blossom Music Center, Ohio (1979), the “James Taylor In Concert” show recorded at the Colonial Theater, Boston (1988) and the feature film “No Nukes - The Muse Concert” show, shot at Madison Square Garden, New York (1979) are not available on DVD.
