Notes: 1) Above picture and following credits were taken from the Canadian vinyl pressing on Arista A2L 8605 (1981) and from the 2007 expanded CD reissue. 2) According to web sources Canadian and US cat #s for the original vinyl release are the same. 3) Expanded CD reissue does not include tracks 9, 12. According to web sources original CD version of album on Arista A2CD 811 was also missing tracks 9, 12. 4) Lee plays bass only on the three Michael Masser-produced tracks (11, 13, 15 / CD10, CD11, CD13). It is necessary to note that track 11 / CD10 (“There’s A Long Road Ahead Of Us”) was at the time released as a single and that its b-side, “This Time Is Ours”, was equally written and produced by Masser and probably had Lee on bass as well. This track was not available on any album until its inclusion in an expanded CD reissue of Ms. Warwick's “No Night So Long” LP. Please check back for the relative entry. 5) For some reason, two songs from the “Hit Records Medley”, that is “There’s Always Something There To Remind Me” (CD5K) and “Promises, Promises” (CD5M) are not included in the expanded CD reissue’s tracklist, both on rear inlay and inner booklet credits. This is a typo as both compositions are present in the medley. 6) According to pictorial web sources a Japan CD issue of this album was released on Arista 32RD-102. Missing tracks on this Japan release would be “Dedicate My Heart” and “Even A Fool Would Let Go”. 7) Original 2-LP release comes with liner notes by Clive Davis. Please see original sleeve for these. 8) Expanded CD reissue comes with liner notes by David Nathan. Please see original booklet for these. 9) Artwork credits are not disclosed in either version.

Phil Collins - Compilations With Non-Album Tracks/Alternate Versions/Previously Unreleased Tracks

The old post about Lee Sklar’s contributions to the Phil Collins catalog is now split into six separate posts. This is one of them, and you may click on the following links to be redirected to the other five:

Phil Collins ❏ - Studio and live albums
Phil Collins - Single-only versions/remixes
Phil Collins - Unavailable on LP tracks
Phil Collins - DVDs
Phil Collins - Lee w/PC on Various Artists Audio/Video Compilations

As customary, compilations are listed only when including songs or versions of songs not released on original studio albums. While some of these versions may have been released in alternate packaging combinations, only one release instance per track has been listed.

“12”ers” - US CD - front inlay

Phil Collins - 12”ers
Virgin CDEP4 (1987) - UK CD - Gatefold sleeve edition
Atlantic 7 81847-2 (1987) - US CD

3 - Who Said I Would (5:51)
4 - Only You Know And I Know (6:56)
5 - Don’t Lose My Number (6:36)*
6 - One More Night (6:24)*

Notes: 1) This is a collection of remixes of songs that were included, in their original form, on the “No Jacket Required” album and were subsequently released, in their remixed form, as 12" vinyl singles. Record does not come with musician credits: the following credits were taken from the track-by-track credits of the “No Jacket Required” record album. 2) The Virgin CDEP4 CD issue shows, on bottom right corner of front sleeve, a miniature image of the full PC/Marilyn Martin single “Separate Lives” sleeve picture. The Atlantic US issue has this replaced by a crop of same picture showing PC without Ms. Martin. Whether the latter is true also of the EU non-gatefold release on WEA 2-55469-2 is unbeknownst to me. 3) The Virgin CDEP4 CD issue comes with a 16-page booklet catalog of Virgin’s CD issues called “Circular 1”. 4) Tracks 1, 2, 5 and 6 are also included in a 45rpm 12” EP collection issued by WEA with the same title. The extended remix of track 1, however, is different both in timing and arrangement. See the entry in the Phil Collins - Single-Only Versions/Remixes post. 5) For extended musician credits please refer to entries in the Phil Collins - Studio and Live Albums post.

Phil Collins - Vocals, Keyboards, Drums (1, 4, 5), Roland 909 (1, 2), Backing Vocals, Simmons, Vocoder, Kalimba, The Odd Keyboard, Bass, Linn Drum Machine (4, 5), Roland 808 (6)

18 - I’ve Forgotten Everything - “Both Sides”
19 - Somewhere - radio edit - “AA. VV. - The Songs Of West Side Story” (1996)
20 - Least You Can Do - “Testify”
21 - Two Hearts - “Buster”/”…Hits”
22 - Separate Lives (Live)* - “Serious Hits… Live!”
23 - My Girl (Live) - “Live From The Board”
24 - Always (Live)* - edited version from the “Serious Hits… Live!” video DVD (see notes)
25 - The Way You Look Tonight (Live) - previously unreleased - Montreux 1998

Notes: 1) The titles following the song names indicate those albums the tracks were taken from. Many thanks to Alessandro Bosi at www.philcollins.invisionzone.com for helping with some of the previously unreleased tracks, and the original album titles. This information is not contained in the CD notes. 2) For extended musician credits please refer to the entries in the Phil Collins - Studio and Live Albums post. 3) Track 24 (“Always”) appears to be an edited and possibly remixed version of the same “Serious Hits… Live!” DVD performance, although this is not stated anywhere in the CD notes. This particular track, however, had already been released as the b-side of the “Both Sides Of The Story” CD/cassette single WEA 4509-94090-2/WE C 795 (1993) (see pictures below). 4) These are the differences between the DVD version of track 24 (“Always”) and the “Love Songs” and “Both Sides” b-side version: a) At 2:32 on the CD: “and not for just a day” is “no no not for just a day”. b) At 2:57 on the CD: the mix brings up the rimshots. c) At 3:26 on the CD: the vocal phrasing on “for just a day” is different. d) At 3:58 on the CD: Daryl Stuermer’s guitar licks appear to be in a more staccato feel. e) At 4:10 on the CD: Lee’s ascending glissato on bass, right over the “you” coda of the vocals, has been mixed out. f) The whole of the track vocals appear to have been equalized in post production. Please note that as far as the differences in mixing go, these might be due to the surround remix of the DVD. 5) According to web sources, this anthology was issued in the US on Rhino 78058 (2004).

“This compilation is something I’ve been thinking of for a long time now…. a collection of love songs that I’ve either written or co-written and that I consider to be amongst my best work, in addition to songs that have been written by other writers and admired by me from a distance, whilst secretly wishing that I HAD written them! There are also some songs here that I feel extremely close to, but were missed the first time around because of circumstances beyond their control! It’s not a “Hits” collection, but I would certainly call it a “Best Of”…. Hope you enjoy ‘em… - Phil”.

Notes: 1) This entry is about a Japanese vinyl EP comprising of songs that were included, in their original form, on the “No Jacket Required” album and were subsequently released, in their remixed form, as 12” vinyl singles. Whether this particular compilation was issued in other countries is unbeknownst to me. 2) Please note that while track 1, 3 and 4 are the same extended mixes included in the EU/US CD compilation “12”ers” (see entry in the Phil Collins - compilations post), track 2 is an entirely different remix, with a different duration and a different arrangement. Whether this specific extended mix had been issued as a 12” single prior to this compilation’s release is unbeknownst to me. 3) Japanese release comes with a lyrics and photo insert. 4) For more detailed musician credits please see the “No Jacket Required” entry in the Phil Collins - Studio and Live Albums post.

1 - Everyday (album track)
2 - Don’t Call Me Ashley (previously unreleased track)
3 - Everyday (early demo) (previously unreleased track)
4 - Doesn’t Anybody Stay Together Anymore (live)* (previously unreleased version)

Notes: 1) This is an European CD issue of the single “Everyday” taken from the Phil Collins album “Both Sides”. 2) Track 4 was recorded during the 1990 Serious Tour but NOT included in the double live album (see entry in the Phil Collins - Studio and Live Albums post). Also, please note that this track is NOT the same version of the song included in the “Serious Hits... Live!” DVD either. While the two performances seem to be fairly alike, the four repeated title lines near the end, and the words “I wonder why” are sung in a different manner and with subtle variations and additions. 3) For more detailed musician credits about the live track please see the “Serious Hits... Live!” entry in the Phil Collins - Studio and Live Albums post.

3 - Everyday (early demo) (previously unreleased track)
4 - Hang In Long Enough (live)* (audio track from DVD)
5 - Hand In Hand (live)* (audio track from DVD)

Notes: 1) This is a US-only CD issue of the single “Everyday”, taken from the Phil Collins album “Both Sides”. This issue differs from its European counterpart (see entry above) in that the fourth track “Doesn’t Anybody Stay Together Anymore (live)” has been replaced by two other live tracks recorded during the 1990 Serious Tour and similarly NOT included in the double live album (see the “Serious Hits… Live!” entry in the Phil Collins - Studio and Live Albums post): “Hang In Long Enough (live)” and “Hand In Hand (live)”. Contrary to the EU single, though, both of these two live tracks were already been released (same version) in the “Serious Hits... Live! In Berlin” DVD. 2) For more detailed musician credits about the live tracks please see the “Serious Hits... Live!” entry in the Phil Collins - Studio and Live Albums post. 3) According to web sources, this maxi single was released in the US also on 12” vinyl.

Phil Collins - Love Songs - A Compilation... Old And New
6 Track Sampler From the Forthcoming 2CD Compilation
Atlantic/Face Value Records PRO 15092/LCO 4281 (2004) - EU and US promo sampler CD

1 - Tearing And Breaking (edit) - 3:47 (sampler-only track)
2 - Against All Odds - 3:23 (album track)
3 - One More Night* - 4:44 (album track)
4 - True Colours (rehearsal) (edit)* - 3:13 (sampler-only track)

5 - Do You Remember? - 4:35 (album track)
6 - The Way You Look Tonight (live) - 4:03 (album track)

Notes: 1) This is a promotional sampler for the double compilation “Love Songs - A Compilation... Old And New” (see entry in the Phil Collins - compilations post). 2) Tracks 1 and 4 are actual edits of the songs included in the compilation. Differences are as follows (please note that none of these two tracks have a fade-out). “Tearing And Breaking” - The duration of the compilation version is 5:28 while the edit version is 3:47. In the edit, the second verse of the lyrics has been edited out. Also, the ending chorus is repeated two times instead of four with accompaniment, and two times instead of three ‘a cappella’. “True Colours (rehearsal)” - The duration of the compilation version is, again, 5:28, while the edit version is 3:13. In the edit, the second soprano sax solo by Gerald Albright has been edited out. Also, the vocal ad-libs near the ending have been somewhat cut. 3) Track 3 (“One More Night”) is the same Allen Sides remix included in the “Love Songs” compilation (see entry above in the Phil Collins - compilations post). 4) The sampler bears two different catalog numbers and two different labels, one for the EU and the other for the US market (see above). 5) For more detailed musician credits please see the “Love Songs” entry in the Phil Collins - compilations post.

Phil Collins - Unavailable on LP Tracks

Latest update of post: January 2016

The old post about Lee Sklar’s contributions to the Phil Collins catalog is now split into six separate posts. This is one of them, and you may click on the following links to be redirected to the other five:

Phil Collins ❏ - Studio and live albums
Phil Collins - Compilations With Non-Album Tracks/Alternate Versions/Previously Unreleased Tracks
Phil Collins - Single-only versions/remixes
Phil Collins - DVDs
Phil Collins - Lee w/PC on Various Artists Audio/Video Compilations

The definition for the cuts included in this post, at the time of their first release, was ‘unavailable on LP’, as they were not included in albums nor anthologies. However, some of these songs may have since been re-released as part of compilations or alternate packaging combinations: please note that only one release instance per track has been listed, that is its first pressing. As for Lee being a musician on these tracks, producer Hugh Padgham was so kind as to reply to an enquiry of mine saying Lee probably did play on these titles, but that he cannot remember definitely for sure, as he did not keep records. In order to make the tracks in question stand out, they have been printed in boldface. Still, no asterisk has been placed and the tracks are signaled by a question mark instead.

Side B

2 - Homeless (Another Day In Paradise Demo) - unavailable on LP
3 - You’ve Been In Love (That Little Bit Too Long) - unavailable on LP

Notes: 1) This UK release comes with a lyrics color insert depicting the sound image of the side-a mixdown (‘vibe’ sheet). Judging from a picture in the “...But Seriously” inner sleeve, this is one in a series of diagrams that were probably drawn by PC for each song in the collection. 2) The catalog number on the insert is VSTX 1240. 3) There do exist at least two types of sleeve layout for this release, the one above and an alternate one reading “Includes Limited Edition full color ‘Vibe’ sheet with lyrics” just below the title.

Notes: 1) This entry is about a Brazilian DVD re-release of the video known as “No Ticket Required”, originally released in the UK in 1986 on WEA Music Video 252 411-3 (VHS) and 252 411 (laserdisc). The live concert video was filmed during the May, 29, 1985 date that PC held at the Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas, during a leg of the “No Jacket Required” World Tour. According to web sources it is possible that this DVD release be a bootleg, of inferior image quality than its laserdisc counterpart. My copy shows indeed a rather muddy NTSC image, but I have not seen the PAL laserdisc so I cannot make any first-hand comparison. 2) Track 16 (“Droned”) is a cut from the PC album “Face Value” mixed over the closing video credits. 3) The following credits were integrated with those taken from an image of the UK VHS release case. 4) My apologies for the low quality of the above picture, which was taken from the web and enhanced. 5) PAL VHS tape running time was 89:16.

Notes: 1) Following a cross-comparison with various web resources, this 2-DVD set appears to be a re-release of same performance already issued in 1990 as “Seriously Live In Berlin” on Virgin Vision VVD 783 (VHS - UK) and on Warner Music Vision 9031-72728-6 (laserdisc - Japan). Actual DVD video content shows indeed the “Seriously Live In Berlin” title superimposed on intial scene. According to same sources, track list and duration appear to be unchanged, minus the extra features. 2) While the DVD credits and title are alike to the LP’s (see entry in the Phil Collins - Studio and Live Albums post), the flip side of the case correctly states that the concert in question was filmed “In Berlin”. 3) Although both PC and Chester Thompson play percussion during the performance, no ‘percussion’ player is credited. 4) For more video notes and credits, please refer to actual video content. 5) Total duration is approx 184 mins, with concert being approx 160 mins and documentary (interview) approx 24 mins.

“If all has gone according to plan, you have in your hand more than just a memento of my last full tour. You will have a broad overview of a lot of what I’ve done in the last 25 years. There’ll be huge gaps of course…Genesis, there’s 30 years of work there alone. Brand X…the Princes Trust events… Hugely enjoyable times with Eric Clapton as his drummer…my big band tours with Quincy Jones and Tony Bennett, and the album that followed. …The acting…the numerous gigs, sessions and albums with some of my heroes… Lots more that I’m probably forgetting… So yes, there are some quite large holes that only a 5 or 6 DVD set could fill…maybe one day…
Anyway, just focusing on the solo work, as well as the full concert, you have access to many of the clips for the various singles…some hits, some not. Some seen, some not. Access to a few moments of relevance like “Live Aid” when I hopped continents, or “The Secret Policemans Other Ball” where I played “In The Air” on the piano for the very first time, quite terrified. Little moments that give alternate views of the same song.
There’s an interesting “period piece” that CBS screened in the USA to a mystified public during my “golden years” in the late 80’s, featuring a bizarre mix of people like Bruce Willis, John Travolta, John Candy, Dr. Dre, Henry Mancini, Gilbert Gottfried, The Ultimate Warrior and many many others… All this has been wrapped up to give a pocket guide to my efforts thus far, so dig in and enjoy…”.

“Before I go…..

to the players and singers who gave 110% every night just to make my music sound good,
to Pud and Howard and the crew for getting everything up in time and working,
to Tim, Danny and Noel for shepherding the band from sleep, to hotel, to stage, to hotel and back to sleep again,
to Michel and Alain and the sound crew who made it sound good whether we were in an arena, a stadium, an abattoir or a concrete shell,
to Vince and Telson for giving us something great to look at
to Scotty and the lighting crew for nursing the sick lights back to health,
to Ruary and his band of merry men for catching all the right moments,
to David and Vincent for ensuring the whole bloody thing didn’t fall on somebody,
to Eileen and Martha who had to be mum to the band and crew, and sew and iron and fix and wash,
to Mike and the Chippies for adding a bit here and taking it off there,
to the bus drivers who drove diligently through the night ferrying a sleeping crew just so they could put it all up again,
to the truck drivers who safely carried the instruments, lights and stage and confetti guns from country to country,
to the caterers who fed the army of skilled and unskilled labour as if it were a family of 4,
to the agents and promoters who gave everyone the opportunity to look and listen one last time,
to Nicky for balancing the books,
to Tony who with his left and right hands, Carol and Jo, guided and plotted the last 25 years of my life,
to Mike, Tony, Peter and Steve who shared some trailblazing moments all those years ago,
to all my friends and heroes who let me guide them or play for them,
to the fans who loyally stood in the wind, rain or snow so they could be at the front,
to the fans that bought the records,
to my kids who for the last 30 years have followed dad around the globe without complaint just because that’s his job,
to my wife Orianne for loving me and for responding honestly to my occasional great and sometimes terrible ideas,

to indeed everybody that has contributed in any way, small or otherwise, to me being able to play my music and make a living, and beyond…..

……..a huge thank you. PC xxx”.

“In 2004 I came to a major decision in my life. I decided to stop my seemingly endless days of touring. I had been on the road for the last 30 years, and now with 2 young children I decided that enough was enough. // It was time to say goodnight. // This film documents the last stage of that goodnight tour. It covered many places I'd never played before, and some places NO ONE had played before. The result was that we encountered many remarkable obstacles. // Sadly it was during this tour that my marriage slowly disintegrated before my eyes....and there was nothing to be done but continue. // Filmmaker Anthony Mathile was with me from the first day of rehearsals to the last day in Prague. Therefore he captured many moments, good/bad...happy/sad. For me it is a film of mixed emotions, but it is also a film that touches me more than anything I've done before. // PC”.
