James Taylor - Alternate Single Mixes And Edits

The following is an in-progress section about James Taylor’s alternate single mixes and edits with Lee on bass. Beardbassman and I thought it was best to have it as a separate instance from the actual JT post, so as to make it more reachable. For the time being, this post is not exhaustive: please do keep checking it out ever so often as a lot of material is going to be added on the next few weeks. We wish to emphasize that, as always, only one instance per mix/edit was and will be taken into account: while same version might have been released in a number of different packaging combinations, we are primarily concerned with the mix/edit in and of itself.

Here is the link to the main James Taylor post → James Taylor

  1. Hymn was one of many 45's that used the Haeco compatible stereo generator's mono output (a/ka CSG Mono Process) to create a proper stereo to mono fold down from an existing stereo master. A proper dedicated mono mix is always preferred, but sometimes a CSG processed mono fold-down is quite good and sometimes the sound quality just sucks. I guess this makes sense both cost wise and time wise. Records using the CSG stereo process sounded just awful. A&M, Atlantic/Atco, Warner-Reprise, Elektra and a few others jumped on the CSG bandwagon around early 1968. Atlantic had plans to release every record in CSG processed stereo but thankfully that fell through. The last known record to use the CSG stereo process was the 1979 promo 45 of "Pop Muzik" by M which had both long and short versions in stereo.

  2. Hi. Thanks for the comment. The two CSGs mono titles here seem to be quite good indeed.
