Notes for Track 9 (“Adónde Voy”) from the “Jardin Azul/Las Canciones Favoritas” 2004 Anthology

“Tish Hinojosa, a good, thoughtful songwriter from Texas, wrote this. She grew up in the Southwest along the border, and being Mexican-American, is especially sensitive to the desperate struggles of the Mexican migrant workers. It takes an enormous amount of courage to leave your village - where you know everybody will to starve to death if you don’t put your life on the line - to try to make it across the border, and then try to get a job up in the United States. When you get there, if you can get a job, you’re likely to be underpaid, harassed by police, rounded up, and jailed indefinitely. The hardest part is not knowing where you’re going or what will happen once you get there. “Adonde Voy” is not a traditional song. It’s written from the point of view of a contemporary Mexican-American who is already here and established, who sees this happening and wonders how these people survive.”.
