“I guess it was sometime during my high school years, when I sang with the Erasmus Hall High School mixed chorus (directed by Mr. Depietto) and later with the chorus at Abraham Lincoln High School (directed by Mrs. Eisen) in Brooklyn, that I fell in love with Christmas music. Every December we had a Christmas chorale, a performance of Christmas music by various singing groups: the 100-voice mixed chorus, the 20-voice girls’ choir, a few brave soloists and the entire school orchestra. All those kids, all that wonderful Christmas music... it was goose bumps for days! // Sometimes between the big choral rehearsals for the show... just for the fun of it, we would break into little vocal groups and do our own takeoffs on some of the Christmas songs. We adapted them to the more current musical styles of the day: “White Christmas” became a doo-wop ditty, and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” became vintage barbershop. // I never dreamed as a teenager that I’d someday get to stand in front of the whole shebang and sing lead throughout - and even throw in a composition of my own, along with a few of my favorites. Talk about miracles. What nerve, what gall, what chutzpah...what fun! // I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. // Merry Christmas, Neil Diamond”.

“Conducted by Elmer Bernstein”.
“What a genuine thrill it is to sing live with a large orchestra, especially a great live orchestra and most especially, a great live orchestra with a legendary film composer/conductor at the helm -- in this particular case Mr. Elmer Bernstein, who fell for my pitch that I could sing these movie classics. Of course, I knew I could... I'd been singing some of them since I was a kid. But my thanks to Elmer for telling me how to do it with a full orchestra, without the traditional rhythm section to keep me on track. “Just lead the way and we will follow,” said Mr. Bernstein at one of our early meetings. “Follow?” I thought, “How do you get an 80 piece orchestra to follow you when you perform the songs a little different every time you do them?” Elmer repeated, “I can follow you.” How could I question this man? he is the legendary Elmer Bernstein and I was just the singer in this ensemble. Could it be that all I had to do was sing? // Of course, I picked great songs to sing, it always helps to have great songs and great arrangers. Add a Producer (Bob Gaudio) whose job it is to bring all these disparate elements together into one beautiful record, and lots of love and care, and the result is this album. These are some of my all time movie favorites. May they keep you warm too as time goes by. // With Love of course, // Neil Diamond”.
