Andrew Gold Memorial Concert

Andrew Gold Memorial Concert - L.A., November 19th, 2011

Friends and relatives of the late singer-songwriter Andrew Gold gathered on Saturday in L.A for a musical celebration of Gold’s life. The musician, who passed away last June at the age of 59, was one of the most well-loved artists of the L.A. scene.

Son of Academy Award-winning composer Ernest Gold and of classically-trained soprano Marni Nixon, Gold took his first musical steps in the Seventies as part of the Linda Ronstadt group, and reached individual success in the second half of that decade with hit singles like “Lonely Boy” and “Thank You For Being A Friend”. In the Eighties, Gold formed the successful new wave pop-duo Wax with ex-10cc member Graham Gouldman, and kept being quite active as a musician and producer after the group disbanded in 1990, right up until recent years.

Among the many artists and friends who got on stage to pay tribute to his memory and musical legacy were singers Rosemary Butler and Deborah Pearl, keyboard player Jon Gilutin, drummer Rick Marotta, Lee Sklar on bass, Gold’s three daughters Emily, Victoria and Olivia and his sister Melani. He will be dearly missed.

Some of the musicians who gathered last Saturday in L.A. for the Andrew Gold Memorial Concert.

Singers Rosemary Butler and Deborah Pearl are joined on stage by Andrew Gold’s sister Melani and his three daughters Emily, Victoria and Olivia.

Klaatu (Terry Draper, Dee Long, John Woloschuk)

Klaatu - Endangered Species
Daffodil SBA-16060 (1980) - Canada LP

Side One

1 - I Can’t Help It*
2 - Knee Deep In Love*
3 - Paranoia*

4 - Howl At The Moon

Side Two

5 - Set The World On Fire*
6 - Hot Box City*
7 - Dog Star*

8 - Sell Out, Sell Out
9 - All Good Things

Notes: 1) This is the fourth album by Canadian group Klaatu. 2) Above image and following credits were taken from the US vinyl release on Capitol ST-12080 (1980). 3) Album does not come with either musician or tech credits. Roles of band members at the time of the sessions and recording location were inferred from the interview database at www.klaatu.org. I want to thank that website's owner, David Bradley, for being so kind as to allowing me to make use of said material for the compilation of this post and for some help with last-minute adjustments. 4) In the above mentioned interviews, Klaatu member John Woloschuk and “Endangered Species” producer Christopher Bond (→ Hall & Oates) explain how album was recorded in Los Angeles, and that a number of L.A. session musicians were chosen to lay down basic tracks prior to group members adding vocals and overdubs. Lee was one of these musicians and the highlighted tracks indicating his contributions in the above track list are the result of both Mr. Woloschuk’s and Mr. Bond’s recollections of the recording session process, expressed in said interviews, along with those of the other two band members Terry Draper and Dee Long. You can read the full text of these interviews at the following links (just click on them to be redirected):

2001 interview with “Endangered Species” producer Christopher Bond by Mark Hershberger
1997 interview with Klaatu member John Woloschuk by David Bradley
2006 fans Q&A with John Woloschuk conducted by David Bradley
1980 interview with Klaatu by former editorial manager of Capitol Records US, Stephen Peeples

The above is true also for the other session musicians mentioned in the following credits. 5) Please note how John Woloschuk’s recalling reaches two different conclusions about Lee’s presence on track 8. On the Q&A article dated May, 2006, he mentions it as one of the two tracks he later overdubbed bass on. 6) Please note how in above interviews no other bass player except Lee is mentioned as having taken part to the recording sessions of “Endangered Species”. Track attributions in this post are therefore the result of Mr. Woloschuk’s recollections, which were found not to be conflicting with Mr. Bond’s notion that Lee played bass on ‘at least a couple of the tracks’. 7) At the same link for the fans Q&As you will find a list of demoed songs that had been taped in preparation for the “Endangered Species” album sessions. Please note that the existence of subsequent versions of these songs recorded with the participation of Lee or of any of the other session players at the time is not a sure thing, and could only be confirmed by Mr. Bond’s master tape copies, as he explains in the above-mentioned interview. 8) Also according to what related on same sources as above, Klaatu’s drummer Terry Draper was not featured on the finished album as such and only appears as a vocalist. 9
) “Endangered Species” was re-released on CD by Bullseye Records of Canada. This edition will have liner notes by Klaatu members Terry Draper and John Woloschuk, and by producer Christopher Bond. Please check back for further addition about this release on this very same post. 10) Please check bottom of post for entry about the “Knee Deep In Love” single original 7” mixes.

8 - Burning Down The Bridge
9 - I Don’t Want To Stop

Notes: 1) This is the solo debut of Loverboy’s lead vocalist Mike Reno. 2) Album was recorded in the early Nineties and due to be released on Sony, but it was ultimately shelved until Mike Reno himself released it as a CD via his own website www.mikereno.com. This website is not currently online anymore (November, 2011). 3) No musician credits are included in the CD album’s booklet. Lee was however one of the studio players performing on the recordings. 4) According to web sources - namely www.melodicrock.com/reviews/mikereno-renovation.p3 - other tracks were cut at recording time but eventually dropped from the final release. Same website mentions guitarist Tim Pierce as one of the original session musicians involved in the project. 5) End of track 1 is somewhat truncated. 6) Track 6 has a drop at 2:43. 7) It is not clear from the very minimal tech credits if engineer Humberto Gatica was the recordist for the whole album or only for the closing track “All I Ever Needed Was You”. 8) The only songwriting credits included in the CD album notes are for track 10.

November 9th/10th, 2011: The Latin Grammy Awards - Person Of The Year Tribute to Shakira

As some of you might know already, Colombian pop superstar Shakira is going to be the recipient of the Latin Person Of The Year Tribute at the next Latin Grammy® Awards 2011. Shakira, winner of two Grammy Awards and of seven Latin Grammys, will be honored with the tribute during a gala ceremony, and performing in a special concert event taking place in the context of the Latin Grammys, all on November 9th at the Mandalay Bay South Pacific Ballroom in Las Vegas, NV.

I just had a talk with our roving reporter at large, BeardBassman, and he spilled the beans: Leland Sklar is going to perform with Shakira on this very important occasion. While the gala/concert event will be a private thing, we are sure that BB is going to come up with some cool, exclusive behind-the-scenes images, and you will only have to stay tuned to these pages to be surprised. Lee will also appear with a number of other artists, and will be the bass player for Mexican singer-songwriter nominee Marco Antonio Solís on the Grammy Show night.

The prestigious Shakira event will precede the 12th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, which will be broadcast live on the Univision Network on Thursday, November 10, 2011. For airing times and a full schedule of this year’s nominees please have a look at the dedicated Grammy website by clicking → here (Spanish, English and Portuguese languages).
