Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams

Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams - That’s What Friends Are For
Columbia JC 35435 (1978) - US LP
Columbia Legacy CK 85655 (2003) - US CD - Reissue with 4 bonus tracks

Side One

1 - You’re All I Need To Get By
2 - Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)
3 - You’re A Special Part Of My Life
4 - Ready Or Not
5 - Me For You, You For Me

Side Two

6 - Heaven Must Have Sent You
7 - Just The Way You Are
8 - That’s What Friends Are For
9 - I Just Can’t Get Over You
10 - Touching Me With Love

CD reissue bonus tracks

11 - Emotion - Also in the Johnny Mathis album “You Light Up My Life”
12 - Too Much, Too Little, Too Late - Also in the Johnny Mathis Album “You Light Up My Life”
13 - Love Won’t Let Me Wait - From the Johnny Mathis album “A Special Part Of Me”
14 - Without Us - Previously Unreleased

Notes: 1) Album does not come with track-by-track musician credits. 2) Album was reissued by Columbia Legacy in 2003 with 4 bonus tracks: 11, 12 are singles which were also included in the Johnny Mathis 1978 solo album “You Light Up My Life” on Columbia 35259; track 13 is a song taken from the Johnny Mathis 1984 album “A Special Part Of Me”; track 14 is a previously unreleased track that was the theme song of the NBC-TV series “Family Ties”. 3) Columbia Legacy CD reissue comes with a differently cropped picture on rear inlay plus four more pictures of Mathis and Williams included in inner artwork, three of which in b&w and one in color. 4) Above picture is of original US LP while following credits were taken both from original LP and from CD reissue. 5) Bizarrely enough, the 2003 reissue on Columbia Legacy provides identification numbers for mixes, recording dates, chart positions and catalog numbers for singles, but has removed the musician credits which were included, albeit not in track-by-track fashion, on the original LP release. 6) 2003 reissue does not mention Glen Spreen as arranger and conductor for track 8, attributing arrangement and conduction to Gene Page instead. 7) According to the liner notes in the 1996 Deniece Williams anthology “Gonna Take A Miracle” on Columbia Legacy CK 64839 (see picture below), it can be inferred that Lee is the bass player on “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late”. No credits to that effect could however be found on the Mathis LP “You Light Up My Life”. 8) Title song is a cover of a 1976 Deniece Williams single and has nothing to do neither with the Paul Williams nor with the Bacharach/Bayer Sager songs of the same title. 9) The EU 1989 CD reissue of this album on CBS Collector’s Choice 902124 2 has same track order and content of original LP but lists the cover of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell song “Heaven Must Have Sent You” as “Your Precious Love”. Whether this is true also of other re-releases is unbeknownst to me. 10) The brief biographical passage which is quoted at the bottom of this entry is an excerpt of the liner notes by journalist Ellis Widner that are coming with the CD reissue, as they are printed on the outer back inlay of the CD package. Please see original booklet for the complete notes.

“In 1977. Mathis took another step that brought him squarely into the mainstream of American pop and soul music - he was teamed with the R&B singer Deniece Williams, a former member of Stevie Wonder’s Wonderlove. For Mathis, it was a bold step. He was a traditional singer, though he covered songs by modern writers. When he recorded this album with Williams, it would be the most diversified, contemporary album of his career.”.

18 - Dreaming Of You - duet with Lionel Richie
19 - Endless Love - duet with Lionel Richie
20 - We’re Always Saying Goodbye - previously unreleased

Notes: 1) “To Love Again” is a Diana Ross 1981 part-anthology/part-new material LP. It was re-released as an extended CD in 2003 with 11 added tracks and some substitutions in the Seventies content (see note #4). 2) The original “To Love Again” LP comprises, on side one, of the 1980 hit single “It’s My Turn” - which had been previously released also on an Original Soundtrack LP on Motown 947 - plus three more new tracks. On side two we find instead a selection of 5 hit songs from Ms. Ross’ Seventies solo catalog. This concept, translated into informational content, appears to have made for a rather confusing case of cover notes: on the original LP the musician credits are supplied only for side one, while arranger/producer credits are given for both sides. According to these LP credits, all of side one (including “To Love Again“) has Lee as bass player. Please note that, even if I did not report it in the following breakdown (as usual I stick to Lee and rhythm section), these same LP credits specify that backing vocalists were NOT singing on the “To Love Again” track. On the other hand, the CD reissue comes with musician credits ONLY for tracks 2, 3 and 4, making it appear as if none of the musicians listed - including Lee - played on the “It’s My Turn” single. If this were true, why didn’t these musicians get excluded from the LP credits for “It’s My Turn” just as the backing vocalists were? Moreover, a number of misnomers was not corrected in the transition from LP to CD repackaging. This might be a clue that the original LP credits have remained basically unchecked, and that the correction about the “It’s My Turn” credits is only the result of a misinterpretation of these original credits as communicated through the LP graphics. In any case, I have stuck to the original LP credits attribution even in the CD listing. 3) According to web sources (pictures) no session players credits are included in the “It’s My Turn” Original Soundtrack Album on Motown 947. 4) The only substitution in the Seventies content shared between LP and CD re-release is track 9, which in the previously unreleased single mix has at least a ten-bar longer fadeout. More detailed info about all the previously unreleased tracks is indicated in the ‘CD Reissue Additional Credits’ section below. 5) Any discrepancy between the spelling of titles from LP to reissue track listing is strictly adherent to sources. 6) Above picture is of original US LP. Following credits are taken both from original US LP and CD reissue. 7) This being a hybrid anthology coming with technical credits only for the new and/or previously unreleased tracks, please do refer to the original source albums for more detailed tech credits altogether. 8) While the Original Soundtrack Album for the film “Mahogany” (1975) does not come with any credits related to the session musicians involved, it is a fact that Lee participated to the recording of that film’s soundtrack and specifically to those sessions pertaining to the “Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To)” single. The drummer playing alongside with Lee in this occasion would be Hal Blaine. Please check back for further additions about this and see picture below.

Notes: 1) “The Force Behind The Power” was originally issued as a 10-track LP. According to web sources, the CD release already came with the bonus track “If We Hold On Together”. A third CD release of “The Force Behind The Power” adds two more bonus tracks to the content: “You And I” and the 1991 single “No Matter What You Do”. This is the issue the following credits were partially taken from. 2) For the “You And I” and “No Matter What You Do” tracks no credits are supplied by the CD notes. 3) The song “If We Hold On Together” was originally included in the movie soundtrack album for the 1988 animation film “The Land Before Time”. So far, I haven’t been able to compare the versions and see if they are one and the same or not. 4) Amongst the various releases of this song as a Diana Ross single there does exist a 2-disc issue including an edit version of the track. Please check the ‘singles’ section below for credits. 5) Above image is of the EU/UK CD. 6) Following credits were taken from both the US LP and the EU/UK CD. 7) The catalog # for the UK release of the EU/UK CD is CDEMD 1023.

“The Weather Girls are: Izora Armstead and Martha Wash”.

“ “Thanks” // My parents, sister, monsters (who constantly scream “Momma” (smiles)) and the main motivator, Frank Armstead. My “Big Baby,” Paul Jabara, the two men who endured all the “madness,” Jerry Solomon and Michael Goldberg (smiles). Special thanks to The Entertainment Company for giving me the chance and the main force who always had the faith in me, Steven Brown. My loyal fans and friends who have been with us all these many years. Most of all and above all others, God, who made everything possible. // Love, // Izora // Thank God for his gifts to me and allowing me to share them with others. Thanks to Mom and Dad for being there (your prayers are appreciated). To Doug Kibble (the Force) for helping me maintain my sanity and standing beside me. // Thanks Steven A. Brown (the legal mind) especially for figuring out all the many legal details. Special thanks to some great friends and supporters: Charlene Moore, Leon Cartright, Lorraine Evans, Sylvester, Sam Wright, Jim Lomax, Kay Bryan and Sam Nixon. // To the fabulous Paul Jabara for his genius (love you, child), Jerry Solomon, Bob Esty, the musicians and singers on the album. My heartfelt thanks and love to The Entertainment Company and the CBS staff. // Not the least “many thanks” to all of our fans who have helped to make us a “Success,” we intend to keep it up! // Love, // Martha // How I got through this, God only knows! // Love, // Paul”.

“After working with Barbra, Donna and Diana - I began to get spoiled - I felt I could only work with “giants in the industry”! I think I found them - Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you - the “toast of the Eighties”… The Weather Girls - // Paul Jabara”.
