Notes about the original album: 1) The original edition of “Atlantic Crossing” does not come with track-by-track musician credits. This is true also for subsequent CD releases of same material and/or alternate versions recorded during the same sessions. Essentially, these were held all in the US with US musicians, including The MG’s (Dunn, Jackson, Jr., Cropper), The Swampers AKA The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (Hood, Hawkins, Johnson, Beckett), and a whole bunch of L.A. players. According to curator Thane Tierney (“The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998” - see below), the presence of keyboardist Booker T. Jones during the MG’s recordings could not be determined, and it is a fact that his name is not mentioned in the album credits. However, Stewart himself admits to have been “the last guy to sing with the entire section” (see the essay in the Collector’s Edition), and in his recollection of the occasion, written for the liner notes of the quadruple 1989 “Storyteller” anthology (Warner Bros. 25987-2) he thanks “Steve, Duck, Booker and Al”. 2) In spite of original album artwork suggesting ‘slow side’ as being ‘side one’, lacquer numbers indicate the opposite. 3) No credits for the artwork department were found on the UK pressing I took down the credits from. They were taken from the CD edition. 4) Above image is of original non-gatefold UK LP release.
Notes about the Collector’s Edition: 1) The 2009 2-CD Collector’s Edition includes previously released material plus a whole disc of alternate versions. 2) Track 25 is a different mixdown of track 11. 3) Track 12 (“To Love Somebody”) is a different, orchestral mixdown of same version already appeared on the “Storyteller” anthology, clocking in a few seconds earlier.

Notes about the original album: 1) Again, the original edition of “A Night On The Town” does not come with track-by-track musician credits. This is true also for subsequent CD releases of same material and/or alternate versions recorded during the same sessions. Taking the cue from “Atlantic Crossing”, the album was recorded in the States with a wholly US personnel. The Swampers appear once again only in track 2, a holdover from the previous year’s sessions. 2) ‘Slow side’ is now ‘side one’, and each side of the record cover has been designed as a ‘recto’, with the opening at the top. 3) According to web sources, “A Night On The Town” was the first album released in the UK by Stewart’s manager Billy Gaff’s own record label, Riva Records. US pressings were however issued on Warner Bros. Records BS 2938. 4) Above image is of original US LP release.
Notes about the Collector’s Edition: 1) The 2009 2-CD Collector’s Edition includes previously released material plus a whole disc of alternate versions. 2) Track 22 is an alternate version of a Beatles song that Stewart covered for the “All This And World War Two” soundtrack album. 3) Track 23 is an ‘a cappella’ snippet of the closing chorus for “The Killing Of Georgie (Part I And II)”. 4) Track 24 is the isolated-from-mix voice of Britt Ekland speaking the few lines in French eventually mixed into the “Tonight’s The Night (Gonna Be Alright)” fadeout. 5) The original cover art, which is a Mike Bryan re-reading of the Pierre-Auguste Renoir painting “Bal du Moulin de la Galette”, is reproduced with a slightly larger crop than original release. You can check it out at the bottom of this entry.

Notes: 1) Tracks 1, 2 and 5 were recorded in the summer of 1992 for the never released album “Once In A Blue Moon”. According to subsequently released credits (“The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998”) Lee was not a player on that project. 2) Three unreleased tracks from the actual “Spanner” sessions - one of which produced by Danny Kortchmar - have been issued on the 4-cd anthology “The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998” (see below). No track-by-track credits are however available for these. 3) Bonus Track “Sailing” is same version as from “Atlantic Crossing”. 4) Above image and following credits were taken from the Japan CD release. 5) Vinyl pressing of this album is not common. Thanks to Jason at the Left Legged Pineapple for kindly providing the side one/two breakdown www.left-legged.com. 6) Some file-downloading websites have in store a so-called expanded edition of this album with four bonus tracks (13MP3, 14MP3, 15MP3, 16MP3). This particular edition does not seem to be available as a CD. I have not been able to track down additional credits for it. Please check back for possible updates.

“This is the album I have waited my whole life to record. // These are the songs that I’ve danced to, made love to, cried to and yes, even fell on the floor to as a young man in the infancy of my career. These songs and singers were the oxygen that fueled my passion to sing. // I was a skinny, cocky, all-mouth-and-trousers teenager living in North London without two pennies to rub together. One of my few possessions was a small, battery driven transistor radio which was permanently glued to my ear. With the help of Radio Luxembourg and Radio Caroline, I discovered the artistry of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, The Temptations, The Four Tops and so many more. I tried to sound like them and dress like them. I wanted to BE them. Growing up, a mere spindle of a lad, these were my Gods and my heroes. // So it is to these masters of soul, and their genius and prodigious talent that I humbly dedicate this album. // RS // 27 october, 2009”.
“Steve Jordan Thanks // Megan Voss, Paul Zukowsky at ML Management, Scooter Weintraub at W Management, Paula Salvatore at Capitol, Charlie Paakkari, Jeff Greenberg at The Village, Sharon Agnello at Sterling Sound, Paiste Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks, all vintage drums, Yamaha snares, Brady snares, Niko and Al.”.
“To The J Records Team, // Eight years and six albums later, and it still feels like the first date. With heartfelt appreciation we thank each and every J-er, but would be remiss if we didn’t hail some of our most dazzling and devoted cohorts: GM Tom Corson, who not only steers the ship, but floats out boat every day; marketing master and talent enabler Scott Seviour; radio guru Richard Palmese; platinum-eared Keith Naftaly; our heroine Rani Hancock, who more than holds her own with the big boys; media queen Sarah Weinstein. And most certainly Mark Springer, John Fleckenstein, JoAnn Kaeding, Samantha Lecca, Annie Meaher, Carrie Smith, Scott Sylvester and divine designer Josh Cheuse. // And a great big 21-gun welcome-aboard salute to Barry Weiss, Chairman and CEO. // Of course, the “J” in J Records belongs to the legendary Clive J. Davis, who not only embraced the artist and his music and defined the repertoire back in 2001, but whose indefatigable drive and pitch perfect oversight have allowed us all to surpass even our wildest expectations. // And beyond J Records, we thank: Allen Grubman, Barry Tyerman, Craig Logan, Graham Lancaster, Moira Bellas, Pally Anthony, Richard Perry, Tita Cahn, Tommy Marolda, Wendy Goldstein, Jackie Oberhauser and Zoe Karatzaferis. // -Rod Stewart and Arnold Stiefel”.
“And to Penny, whose love keeps lifting me higher and higher. -RS”.

Notes: 1) This is a quadruple anthology of both previously released and unreleased Rod Stewart material recorded from 1964 to 1989. While its inclusion might not be pertinent to the blog, it is still an interesting compilation for a number of reasons, like the Rod Stewart-penned track-by-track liner notes. Also, comparing the songs to their vinyl counterparts and to further digital reissues it does seem these masters sound different. Make of it what you will… 2) The tracks taken from the sessions for the two albums Lee played on within this particular time span are the following: 34, 35, 36, 37 (“Atlantic Crossing”); 38, 39, 40 (“A Night On The Town”). No track-by-track credits are available for these, nor for any other number of tracks on the collection. 3) Track 37 is a non-orchestral mixdown of a previously unreleased track whose orchestral mix will appear on the “Atlantic Crossing” collector’s edition (see the above “Atlantic Crossing” entry). 4) Anthology comes with a 26-page booklet inclusive of an introduction by journalist Robert Palmer, a great number of pictures with and about Rod Stewart in the various iconic stages of its career, and track-by-track liner notes by Stewart himself. Please refer to original booklet for these. 5) Anthology comes with no musician credits. Please note that its inclusion into this weblog might not be relevant.

“I’ve been asked by one of my senior subordinates to write a few wry but witty lines concerning my illustrious, albeit chequered musical past. And so with teapot at the ready, pen in hand, and blank page below, I will attempt to critique my own credentials. // And now stepping forth in pristine condition and - as always - stout of spirit, I address the days of yesteryear and other infringements bordering on the sensational. And so by doing diffuse an otherwise explosive situation which may be smouldering the foyer. // Yours, R.D.S.”.

Rod Stewart - If We Fall In Love Tonight
Warner Bros. 9 46452-2 (1996) - US CD - CD anthology with previously unreleased material
US/Canada release track list
1 - If We Fall In Love Tonight - new track
2 - For The First Time - new track
3 - When I Need You - new track
4 - So Far Away - single
5 - Have I Told You Lately - “Vagabond Heart”- studio version remix
6 - My Heart Can’t Tell You No - “Out Of Order”
7 - You’re In My Heart - “Foot Loose & Fancy Free”
8 - First Cut Is The Deepest - “A Night On The Town” - edit version
9 - I Don’t Want To Talk About It - “Storyteller”
10 - Tonight’s The Night (Gonna Be Alright) - “A Night On The Town” - edit version
11 - Sometimes When We Touch - new track
12 - Downtown Train - “Storyteller”
13 - Broken Arrow - “Vagabond Heart”
14 - Forever Young (1996) - “Out Of Order”
15 - All For Love - Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting - “The Three Musketeers” OST
Notes: 1) This is a CD anthology with previously unreleased tracks and versions. Those albums the tracks are taken from are indicated near the song titles. 2) The only album Lee played on that has to do with this anthology’s material is “A Night On The Town”: no credits are available for the two tracks taken from it (“The First Cut Is The Deepest” and “Tonight’s The Night”), nor for any other track on this collection. 3) In spite of what misleadingly indicated in the liner notes, track 9 was not taken from “Atlantic Crossing”. 4) Again, in spite of what misleadingly indicated in the liner notes, the tracks “I Don‘t Want To Talk About It”, “(The) First Cut Is The Deepest” and “Tonight’s The Night” do not appear here in their original album versions. Differences are as follows: a) “I Don’t Want To Talk About It” is actually the new Rod Stewart and Bernard Edwards-produced drums-and-saxophone arrangement that was originally included in the quadruple 1989 “Storyteller” anthology (see above entry). This means that the relative Tom Dowd production credit in the liner notes is a mistake. b) The version of “(The) First Cut Is The Deepest” appears to be a differently equalized re-master with punchier basses and wider stereo positioning of guitars and mandolin. Its harp intro has been deleted and total fade-out has been shortened to about six measures earlier than on original album. c) The Britt Ekland voiceover on the fade-out guitar solo in “Tonight’s The Night” has been mixed out, and track ends some 22 seconds earlier than original. 5) Above picture and following credits were taken from the Canada CD release on Warner Bros. W2 46452. 6) According to web sources two more versions of this collection have been released- One is an international edition which is not inclusive of “So Far Away” but comes with the two additional tracks “Sailing” and “Tom Traubert’s Blues (Waltzing Matilda)”, both previously released. The other is a Japan edition which has the same track list as the international edition but substitutes “Broken Arrow” with the “Your Song” cover from the “Two Rooms” Elton John/Bernie Taupin tribute album. I have had no way of checking out whether any of this info is true. 7) CD album comes with no musician credits. Please note that its inclusion into this weblog might not be relevant.

However, no track-by-track credits are available for these, nor for any other number of tracks on the collection: musicians are listed by album sessions, and for the above mentioned projects personnel is listed as it already was in the original album notes. For those projects that had misleading credits (“Absolutely Live”) or that were shelved (“Once In A Blue Moon”), the credits included do not list Lee as a player. Therefore, inclusion of this anthology into this weblog might not be relevant.
