Klaatu (Terry Draper, Dee Long, John Woloschuk)

Klaatu - Endangered Species
Daffodil SBA-16060 (1980) - Canada LP

Side One

1 - I Can’t Help It*
2 - Knee Deep In Love*
3 - Paranoia*

4 - Howl At The Moon

Side Two

5 - Set The World On Fire*
6 - Hot Box City*
7 - Dog Star*

8 - Sell Out, Sell Out
9 - All Good Things

Notes: 1) This is the fourth album by Canadian group Klaatu. 2) Above image and following credits were taken from the US vinyl release on Capitol ST-12080 (1980). 3) Album does not come with either musician or tech credits. Roles of band members at the time of the sessions and recording location were inferred from the interview database at www.klaatu.org. I want to thank that website's owner, David Bradley, for being so kind as to allowing me to make use of said material for the compilation of this post and for some help with last-minute adjustments. 4) In the above mentioned interviews, Klaatu member John Woloschuk and “Endangered Species” producer Christopher Bond (→ Hall & Oates) explain how album was recorded in Los Angeles, and that a number of L.A. session musicians were chosen to lay down basic tracks prior to group members adding vocals and overdubs. Lee was one of these musicians and the highlighted tracks indicating his contributions in the above track list are the result of both Mr. Woloschuk’s and Mr. Bond’s recollections of the recording session process, expressed in said interviews, along with those of the other two band members Terry Draper and Dee Long. You can read the full text of these interviews at the following links (just click on them to be redirected):

2001 interview with “Endangered Species” producer Christopher Bond by Mark Hershberger
1997 interview with Klaatu member John Woloschuk by David Bradley
2006 fans Q&A with John Woloschuk conducted by David Bradley
1980 interview with Klaatu by former editorial manager of Capitol Records US, Stephen Peeples

The above is true also for the other session musicians mentioned in the following credits. 5) Please note how John Woloschuk’s recalling reaches two different conclusions about Lee’s presence on track 8. On the Q&A article dated May, 2006, he mentions it as one of the two tracks he later overdubbed bass on. 6) Please note how in above interviews no other bass player except Lee is mentioned as having taken part to the recording sessions of “Endangered Species”. Track attributions in this post are therefore the result of Mr. Woloschuk’s recollections, which were found not to be conflicting with Mr. Bond’s notion that Lee played bass on ‘at least a couple of the tracks’. 7) At the same link for the fans Q&As you will find a list of demoed songs that had been taped in preparation for the “Endangered Species” album sessions. Please note that the existence of subsequent versions of these songs recorded with the participation of Lee or of any of the other session players at the time is not a sure thing, and could only be confirmed by Mr. Bond’s master tape copies, as he explains in the above-mentioned interview. 8) Also according to what related on same sources as above, Klaatu’s drummer Terry Draper was not featured on the finished album as such and only appears as a vocalist. 9
) “Endangered Species” was re-released on CD by Bullseye Records of Canada. This edition will have liner notes by Klaatu members Terry Draper and John Woloschuk, and by producer Christopher Bond. Please check back for further addition about this release on this very same post. 10) Please check bottom of post for entry about the “Knee Deep In Love” single original 7” mixes.

1) “Silver Meteor” is an anthological record album originally released on Sierra Records in 1980, including both previously un-issued and hard-to-find material in the area of early progressive country. Its primary importance lies in the presence of four tracks from guitar virtuoso Clarence White’s first - and never released - solo album. These four tracks were recorded on June 28 and 29, 1973, just two weeks before White got killed by a drunken driver in Palmdale, California, on July 15, 1973. The line-up of Clarence White’s recording group includes members of Country Gazette (minus Kenny Wertz), plus drummer Ed Greene, Ry Cooder on slide guitar (on track 4), Herb Pedersen on guitar and vocals, and Clarence’s brother Roland White on mandolin. Lee plays electric bass on all the four tracks alongside Steve Bush on acoustic bass. 2) “Silver Meteor” got finally reissued on CD in 2010, with 14 added bonus tracks. Two of these are previously unreleased recordings by Country Gazette (22, 23) and one is a cover of the Gram Parsons song “One Hundred Years From Now” performed by an undisclosed group of musicians called The Mystery Band (26). 3) In a list of the 50 greatest ‘lost’ albums compiled in May 2010 by British magazine Uncut, “Silver Meteor” got voted 11th best lost album ever. The poll commentary from Uncut is reproduced on the CD reissue back inlay. 4) Lee is also the bass player on the two Casey Kelly tracks that follow. In the Seventies, Kelly released a couple of albums on Elektra, “Casey Kelly” (Elektra EKS-75040, 1972), produced by Richard Sanford Orshoff, and “For Sale” (Elektra EKS-75072, 1973), produced by Sanford Orshoff and Robert Putnam. Lee is the only bass player on the first album, and plays bass on about half of the songs on the second. 5) CD album reissue comes with a fold-out inlay including original introduction and liner notes by William H. Koon, plus further annotations on the bonus tracks. Please refer to original inlay for these. 6) Above picture and following credits were taken from the CD album reissue. 7) Given the discursive fashion of the liner notes, line-ups and musician/songwriter credits therein presented are sometimes non-exhaustive. Since some of these albums are traceable through the web, it was possible to integrate a few missing catalog numbers and/or songwriters from photographic sources. No other integration has been made in the following write-up. 8) One track from Clarence White’s solo album sessions, “Alabama Jubilee”, got included also in the anthological Clarence White collection “Flatpick” (2006) released on Sierra CD 1024. The anthology got later reissued as an extended 2-CD collector’s edition on Sierra SZCD 6026 (see picture at the bottom). 9) “Silver Meteor” and “Flatpick” are available from the Sierra Records online shop at sierrarecords.goestores.com . 10) Again, my heartfelt thanks for help go to John Delgatto.

Charlene (Charlene Duncan)

Lee’s work with Charlene is linked to a number of albums that have been released with a peculiar paucity of production details. The LPs in question may indeed appear as a kind of experiment in the art of progressive repackaging. An eponymous first album was issued in 1976 and reissued the following year with one song substitution, some editing and a different title. Five years later, three selections that had been on both of these records were once again released as part of a new LP, with seven new cuts to round the album off. Some credits for the players involved were finally included in the sleeve notes, but they were not exhaustive and did not specify who played what in which tracks, nor in what period of time.

You will notice among the following credits the name of legendary sound engineer Eirik Wangberg (Erik The Norwegian). Mr. Wangberg was so kind as to supply some production details and invaluable hints as to the recording and mixing process behind these LPs. He was particularly specific, indicating that the sonic differences I spotted while comparing those tracks the albums have in common could be due to various degrees of intervention which do not necessarily imply remixing: some cuts might have been compressed during new mastering, some editing could have been done on the same mix, some old (previous) mix could have been used, etc. He suggested I should draw my own conclusions on the question of remixes.

These sonic differences have been pointed out track by track in the bottom notes while some general structural differences are indicated near the song titles in the track lists. My heartfelt thanks go to Mr. Eirik Wangberg and to whomever will want to make additions. You may visit Mr. Wangberg’s website at www.eirikwangberg.com.

Charlene Duncan - Charlene
Prodigal P610015S1 (1976) - US LP

Side One

1 - It Ain’t Easy Comin’ Down - split on coda
2 - I’ve Never Been To Me - spoken voiceover on break
3 - Rings
4 - Somewhere In My Life
5 - I Want To Come Back As A Song

Side Two

6 - Hey Mama - full fade-out
7 - I Love Every Little Thing About You
8 - It’s Really Nice To Be In Love Again
9 - Shake A Hand
10 - On My Way To You

Notes: 1) Album is credited to Charlene Duncan, but only on sleeve spine. Label does not mention the surname Duncan. 2) Album was partially reissued in 1977 with the title “Songs Of Love” (see entry below) with new song “Freddie” substituted for old track “Shake A Hand” and different track order. 3) Track 2 comes with same structure as later 1982 re-release: it has a spoken voiceover on a 6-measure instrumental break before final verse. 4) Sound engineer Eirik Wangberg is credited only as mixing engineer while, in fact, he was also the recording engineer for all of the album material, with the exception of track 1, for which he only recorded the vocals. 5) According to Mr. Wangberg, although he sometimes worked at Motown Studios, the actual recording studios for the album were Sound Labs Studios in Hollywood. 6) According to some web sources there exists a version of this album entitled “It Ain’t Easy Comin’ Down” with same track order. Apart from being mentioned in Wikipedia, this piece of info has not been verifiable so far, as not a single copy of such edition is to be found for sale nor a single image of it appears anywhere on the web. 7) While Berry Gordy is thanked in the sleeve notes (as B.G.), he is not credited as executive producer. He will be on the 1977 “Songs Of Love” partial re-release (see entry below). 8) Album does not come with musician credits.

1 - It Ain’t Easy Comin’ Down - same 1976 mix, split on coda
2 - I’ve Never Been To Me - edit version (no spoken voiceover, shorter break)
3 - Rings
4 - Somewhere In My Life
5 - Hey Mama - shortest fade-out

Side Two

6 - Freddie - new track
7 - I Love Every Little Thing About You
8 - It’s Really Nice To Be In Love Again
9 - I Want To Come Back As A Song
10 - On My Way To You

Notes: 1) As is also indicated on sleeve notes, album is a partial reissue of the “Charlene” LP (see entry above), with new song “Freddie” substituted for old track “Shake A Hand” and different track order. 2) Track 2 comes with no voice-over in the instrumental break. Break itself is 4-measure and not 6-measure long. 3) Track 5 has a much shorter fade-out than on the 1976 LP. Other than that, version of song is the same. 4) Sound engineer Eirik Wangberg is credited only as mixing engineer while, in fact, he was also the recordist for all of the album material, with the exception of track 1, for which he only recorded the vocals. 5) According to Mr. Wangberg, although he sometimes worked at Motown Studios, the actual recording studios for the album were Sound Labs Studios in Hollywood. 6) Arrangement of track 7 is credited to James Carmichael and Larry Duncan and not to Dennis Provisor as was the case for the 1976 LP. Yet, version of song is the same. 7) Album does not come with musician credits.

Charlene - I’ve Never Been To Me
Motown 6009ML (1982) - US LP

Side One

1 - I’ve Never Been To Me - 1976 version
2 - It Ain’t Easy Comin’ Down - alternate sound positioning, no split on coda
3 - Can’t We Try - new song
4 - Hungry - new song
5 - Hey Mama - medium fade-out

Side Two

6 - I Won’t Remember Ever Loving You - new song
7 - Johnny Doesn’t Love Here Anymore - new song
8 - After The Ball - new song
9 - I Need A Man - new song
10 - If I Could See Myself - new song

Notes: 1) Album is a 1982 new release with three tracks (1, 2, 5) taken from the 1976 “Charlene” and 1977 “Songs Of Love” albums (see entries above). 2) Track 1 is same version as on 1976 LP. 3) Track 2 is probably a remixed version with some differences in stereo positioning and a different coda structure (see notes below). 4) There are or might be some blatant discrepancies, as far as credits go, emerging from the comparison of these three separate LPs. I have limited myself to reproducing what the credit notes read and have no responsibility for these. 5) Album does not come with track-by-track musician credits. 6) Canadian pressing on Motown M6009 comes with a different cover art and some more technical credits, but still no track-by-track musician credits. This alternate cover art was later adopted for CD re-releases. Whether it is specific of the Canadian release or if it was also adopted for US LP releases it is unbeknownst to me. 7) Tech credits (only on Canada release) list Eirik Wangberg as recording engineer and Russ Terrana as mixing engineer. According to Mr. Wangberg, both recording and mixing for the previous and current LP tracks were done by him, with the exception of “It Ain’t Easy Comin’ Down” for which he was the mixing engineer and the recording engineer for the vocals only.

Main Sonic/Structural Differences of Shared Songs

“I've Never Been To Me”

Instrumental break
1976/1982 - 6 measures with spoken voice-over.
1977 - 4 measures without spoken voice-over.

Coda
1976/1982 - Shorter coda as fade-out has 4 repeated blocks, with last audible phrase before total fade-out: “…who could have made me complete”.
1977 - Longer coda as fade-out has 5 repeated blocks, with last audible phrase before total fade-out: “…anywhere I could run, I've been to paradise”.

Drums
1976/1982 - Stereo positioning of snare plus general high-end of drum-kit towards right channel/drums volume seems somewhat louder in mix.
1977 - Stereo positioning of snare plus general high-end of drum-kit towards left channel/drums volume seems somewhat softer in mix.

Vocals
Vocal performance seems to be the same in all of the three mixes with what could be a punch-in on 2nd stanza right at the start of the “(…) Cause I have this need to tell you (…)” line.

“Hey Mama”

Effects
1982 mix has higher level of reverb than the 1976 and 1977 cuts.

Coda
1976 - chorus sung 4 times, fades out completely just before 4th modulation.
1977 - chorus sung 3 times, fades out completely one second earlier than 1982.
1982 - chorus sung 3 times, fades out completely one second later than 1977.

“It Ain't Easy Comin' Down”

Tremolo
(On intro and before 2nd stanza) It is softer in volume on 1982 mix but stereo positioning is the same (left).

Instrumental break
1976/1977 - 8 measures, first 4 without drums/strings over electric bass solo bits have no chorus effect.
1982 - 8 measures, first 4 without drums/strings over electric bass solo bits do have added chorus effect.

Coda
1976/1977 - After instrumental break, Charlene sings an almost complete chorus up to “…but suddenly I found it's comin' - ” then the verse is truncated and it segues straight into the phrase “Ain't easy comin' down, no it…” sung 4 times until total fade-out.
1982 - After instrumental break the chorus part has been edited out and Charlene sings “It ain't easy comin' down, no it…” for 6 and a half times before total fade-out.

Drums
1976/1977 - Stereo positioning of rim-shots plus general high end of drum-kit is towards left.
1982 - Stereo positioning of rim-shots plus general high end of drum-kit is towards right.

Vocals
Different type of reverb on 1982 mix than 1976/1977.

Harriet Schock - Singles

Thanks!

Harriet Schock - Hollywood Town
20th Century T-437 (1974) - US LP

Side One

1 - Hollywood Town*
2 - Standin’ In The Way Of The Music
3 - You Took The Words Out Of My Mouth*
4 - Straight Man*
5 - That’s The Way It Is With You*

Side Two

6 - Ain’t No Way To Treat A Lady*
7 - Hold Me*
8 - The Day*
9 - Let ’Em Love*
10 - Could It Be*

Notes: 1) “Hollywood Town” is singer-songwriter’s Harriet Schock debut LP. 2) An original Schock composition from this LP, “Ain’t No Way to Treat A Lady”, became a huge US top ten hit for singer Helen Reddy in 1975 (#8 on the Billboard Hot 100, #5 on the Cash Box Top 100 Singles chart, #1 on the Billboard Easy Listening charts), charting as well in New Zealand and Australia. An early cover version also exists, done by american group LAX (see pictures at the bottom of entry). The song has since become a classic and has been covered by many other artists worldwide. 3) Ms. Shock’s own performance of “Ain’t No Way to Treat A Lady” on the “Hollywood Town” album was released as the second single from the LP. There appear to be two versions of this cut at two different speeds. Ms. Shock was so kind as to provide some info about this in an email exchange of a few days ago (April 2014). Here is her recollection of the story: “Regarding the speeding up of the single, that was quite a heartbreaking story. There was a music director who was going to play my version of “Ain’t No Way to Treat A Lady” on a top 40 station here in L.A. in the Seventies, when my album came out. “Hollywood Town” was the first single, and “Ain’t No Way to Treat A Lady” was the second single. He wanted it faster, so Russ Regan (head of 20th Century Records) recalled the record, sped it up and reissued it. This music director had a fight with the program director and quit the Friday before the Monday that station was going to start playing my record. There was a second top forty station poised to go on it when the L.A. station did. We lost both stations when the music director from L.A. quit. The promotion staff of 20th Century Records, now scattered around the country in other jobs, is still talking about how close we came. Later on, Helen Reddy heard my version on the radio, because it did get some airplay, and the rest is history.”. My heartfelt thanks go to Harriet Schock for the above. Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams

Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams - That’s What Friends Are For
Columbia JC 35435 (1978) - US LP
Columbia Legacy CK 85655 (2003) - US CD - Reissue with 4 bonus tracks

Side One

1 - You’re All I Need To Get By
2 - Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)
3 - You’re A Special Part Of My Life
4 - Ready Or Not
5 - Me For You, You For Me

Side Two

6 - Heaven Must Have Sent You
7 - Just The Way You Are
8 - That’s What Friends Are For
9 - I Just Can’t Get Over You
10 - Touching Me With Love

CD reissue bonus tracks

11 - Emotion - Also in the Johnny Mathis album “You Light Up My Life”
12 - Too Much, Too Little, Too Late - Also in the Johnny Mathis Album “You Light Up My Life”
13 - Love Won’t Let Me Wait - From the Johnny Mathis album “A Special Part Of Me”
14 - Without Us - Previously Unreleased

Notes: 1) Album does not come with track-by-track musician credits. 2) Album was reissued by Columbia Legacy in 2003 with 4 bonus tracks: 11, 12 are singles which were also included in the Johnny Mathis 1978 solo album “You Light Up My Life” on Columbia 35259; track 13 is a song taken from the Johnny Mathis 1984 album “A Special Part Of Me”; track 14 is a previously unreleased track that was the theme song of the NBC-TV series “Family Ties”. 3) Columbia Legacy CD reissue comes with a differently cropped picture on rear inlay plus four more pictures of Mathis and Williams included in inner artwork, three of which in b&w and one in color. 4) Above picture is of original US LP while following credits were taken both from original LP and from CD reissue. 5) Bizarrely enough, the 2003 reissue on Columbia Legacy provides identification numbers for mixes, recording dates, chart positions and catalog numbers for singles, but has removed the musician credits which were included, albeit not in track-by-track fashion, on the original LP release. 6) 2003 reissue does not mention Glen Spreen as arranger and conductor for track 8, attributing arrangement and conduction to Gene Page instead. 7) According to the liner notes in the 1996 Deniece Williams anthology “Gonna Take A Miracle” on Columbia Legacy CK 64839 (see picture below), it can be inferred that Lee is the bass player on “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late”. No credits to that effect could however be found on the Mathis LP “You Light Up My Life”. 8) Title song is a cover of a 1976 Deniece Williams single and has nothing to do neither with the Paul Williams nor with the Bacharach/Bayer Sager songs of the same title. 9) The EU 1989 CD reissue of this album on CBS Collector’s Choice 902124 2 has same track order and content of original LP but lists the cover of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell song “Heaven Must Have Sent You” as “Your Precious Love”. Whether this is true also of other re-releases is unbeknownst to me. 10) The brief biographical passage which is quoted at the bottom of this entry is an excerpt of the liner notes by journalist Ellis Widner that are coming with the CD reissue, as they are printed on the outer back inlay of the CD package. Please see original booklet for the complete notes.

“In 1977. Mathis took another step that brought him squarely into the mainstream of American pop and soul music - he was teamed with the R&B singer Deniece Williams, a former member of Stevie Wonder’s Wonderlove. For Mathis, it was a bold step. He was a traditional singer, though he covered songs by modern writers. When he recorded this album with Williams, it would be the most diversified, contemporary album of his career.”.
